THE LAW OF LOVE APPLIED IN DOMESTIC AND SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS (22:1—26:19)

Love for God—which was foremost and basic in the life of an Israelite—was to find a practical expression toward his fellowmen. Some of the ways in which love for one's neighbor was evident in daily life are delineated in this passage, 22:1—26:19. Included are some additional regulations for the family and the home and even instructions for the proper care of animals and fields. Although these precepts are given in a miscellaneous order—as is natural enough in a spoken discourse—we shall discuss them topically.

In delineating these instructions, Moses reminds the Israelites of the basis or background for reflecting this love toward their fellowmen. They are reminded that prosperity, righteousness, and blessings are for the people who exemplify and reflect a proper respect for their fellowmen.

Since love and respect for neighbors is related to God, the instructions concerning hatred and revenge must be recognized as component parts. Those who set themselves up against God and His people await the judgment of God.
